COMMON MYTHS ABOUT HEARING LOSS AND...
Common Myths about Hearing Loss and Hearing Aids Submitted by Mary Maddock Au.D. Adapted from The Consumer Handbook on Hearing ...
As a result of the compassionate care we deliver, we develop lasting relationships with our patients. Many times we hear from our patients about how the audiologists and staff at Wilmington Hearing Specialists have helped them. For those of you we hear from, we thank you for passing along your kind words.
Here are some of our favorites:
“I met Dr. Maddock almost 13 years ago when my daughter was diagnosed with a moderate to severe sensori-neural hearing loss in both ears. She not only fitted my then 14-month-old baby with her first set of hearing aids, but also made herself completely available to myself and my family as we navigated the uncertain path ahead of us.
She met with us on Saturday mornings for many weeks to help my daughter adjust in a quiet setting and begin to get comfortable with all the new procedures such as taking ear mold impressions, and responding to sounds in the sound booth. Not an easy task with a baby!
The list of things Dr. Maddock has done for our daughter is infinite. She has been patient and kind. She taught all of us what it would take for our daughter to learn to listen and speak and be successful in school. She has been supportive of our choices and she has attended every meeting concerning our daughter every year beginning with preschool.
Our daughter is now getting ready to enter the 8th grade. She is a happy, well-adjusted teenager who makes straight A+s and loves to read. Dr. Maddock has been there every step of the way. Her dedication to her field and her vast knowledge of audiology have changed the life or our daughter and opened up her future to all possibilities. There are simply no words to express our gratitude.”

“I would like to share with others my experience with Wilmington Hearing Specialists and Dr. Mary Maddock. Last year Dr. Maddock tested my hearing and although my hearing loss was not severe, it was significant. Dr.Maddock fitted me with hearing instruments. I chose the behind-the-ear type and they are hardly visible and so comfortable I forget they are there. I wear them every day. My quality of life is enhanced and now I no longer find myself saying ‘Excuse me’ or ‘I beg your pardon.’ Thank you, Dr. Maddock”

“I have just returned from a cruise to Norway. I rated it the best I have ever taken because I could hear everything. On prior cruises I missed most of the tour guide's descriptions and almost all of the dinner conversations. It was just another reminder of how much my life has improved since Mary custom designed my aids.”

“Mary Maddock described the Virto Q hearing aids as the technological advancement that occurs every few years. Since I've worn hearing aids for about 25 years, I've seen this to be true. Even though I've only had the Virto Q for a week now, it's very clear this new model is the greatest advancement I've ever experienced by a large margin.
Telephone conversations no longer require a ‘hearing impaired’ feature and it's clearly easier to hear ‘mumblers,’ or people who speak more softly or don't project their voice. I have been in a noisy restaurant since getting the aids, but I don't know if it was noisy to the level the ‘focus forward’ program was activated. My hearing there though was better than before.
The cost was comparable to my former aids and the entire device is in the ear, nothing behind. Bottom line, I know I'm hearing better and purchasing the Phonak Virto Q was a good decision.”
